Asian Outreach Program - WOAR

For more information see the Education Training page and the Become a Volunteer or Intern page.

Asian Outreach

Since the start of our Asian Outreach Program in 1997, WOAR has been working to address the gap in Asians who seek services, as well as the barriers that immigrant women and men face when they are experiencing relationship problems, domestic abuse and/or sexual abuse.

One of WOAR’s goals is to continue to engage the various Asian communities in Philadelphia in dialogues about the prevalence of sexual violence to increase awareness about available counseling and legal services for victims of sexual violence. The Asian Outreach Program works hand-in-hand with community-based organizations that are points of contact for Asian American families in order to provide the best services to the Asian communities in Philadelphia.

Not only do we help our Asian clients overcome sexual violence and abuse, but we also engage the various diverse communities in examining the cultural biases that can perpetuate it. Through collaboration with community leaders, educational presentations to community organizations, and the establishment of the Interpersonal Violence Against Asian Communities (IVAAC) Task Force, the number of Asian clients WOAR serves has increased over the years. WOAR’s commitment and dedication has allowed us to continue to build our credibility within the Asian communities.

Goals of WOAR’s Asian Outreach Program Include

  • Actively engage in outreach activities in the Asian American community
  • Foster positive relationships between WOAR and Asian American communities by participating in relevant coalition meetings, as well as media and public events
  • Provide training on Asian American issues to WOAR staff, interns, and volunteers as well as other providing care and services to Asian American survivors
  • Provide training on domestic violence and sexual assault issues to Asian American community leaders and members
  • Develop linguistically appropriate educational and outreach materials specific to the Asian communities
  • Improve language accessibility of WOAR services (telephone interpretation services, literature in Asian languages, forms in Asian languages)
  • Collaborate with Direct Services staff to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services to Asian clients

Currently due to funding cuts WOAR does not have an Asian Outreach position. If you are looking for information or services please contact the WOAR office at 215-985-3315.
