WOAR has highly trained Master’s level counselors who provide counseling to help people heal from sexual abuse. Trauma specific counseling refers to a more focused type of therapy in which we concentrate the sessions on the abuse which occurred in your lifetime and the effects it continues to have on your life. Treatment methods vary from talking through thoughts, feelings and behaviors, establishing coping mechanisms, becoming educated on symptoms and the dynamics of sexual assault, journaling, using art, music or movement, and relaxation techniques.
Some treatment that is used with adults can also be used with children, especially teenagers. However, we find that there are better ways to reach children. Creative Arts Therapy refers to different kinds of counseling including Play Therapy and Art Therapy. Since children may not be able to fully understand what happened to them, or because it can be difficult for children to put words to their thoughts and feelings methods besides talking are used in session. In Play Therapy games, dolls and other toys are used to help children feel more comfortable with their counselor, explore their feelings and verbalize their thoughts. Art Therapy allows a child to express their thoughts and feelings as they draw and paint.
