WOAR provides free counseling services for both females and males who have been sexually assaulted. The sessions are focused on the sexual abuse that has occurred and the effects it may have had on your life. WOAR has specially trained Master’s level clinicians that provide trauma focused counseling. The sessions are usually 50 minutes to 1 hour once a week.
WOAR is currently involved in a program with the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania. The program focuses on adolescent girls ages 13-18 who have a history of sexual assault or sexual abuse and are suffering from difficulties related to the assault/abuse. The program’s goal is to compare two counseling styles for survivors of sexual assault/abuse and see if one is more effective than the other. Visit www.teenstarproject.org for more information.
Be careful about putting detailed information about yourself online, including pictures, school name and activities, and contact information. You never know who might have access to your information. Most importantly, never meet in person with someone you've met online. You never know who that person might really be.
If you don't hear "no," that is not the same thing as hearing "yes." Consent means giving and receiving "yes" from both people involved. Make sure you're both on the same page and get consent every time!
In Pennsylvania it's important to know that if sexual activity occurs between one person under 16 years old and another person who is 4 or more years older, that's Statutory Rape. Protect yourself and the balance of power in your relationship. Know the law.
Believe your friend and listen. Tell your friend it was not her/his fault. Medical care is strongly encouraged to make sure they are ok, even if no injuries are visible. Contact WOAR's hotline for information on options, and let them decide what to do.
