Childhood Sexual Abuse

Child Sexual Assault (CSA) is attempted or actual sexual contact between a child and an adult or a child and another child. CSA can involve the use of physical force, threats of violence, bribes, or abuse of a position of authority (most children seek approval from adults).

Common Reactions in Children Who Have Been Sexually Abused

Fears to be alone, go to sleep or of strangers

Outbursts of anger

Behavioral changes at home and/or school
Changes in their personality: For example, if a child is normally social you may witness increased isolation
Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach or genital discomfort, skin rashes in genital area
Regression to early behaviors such as return to bedwetting, not wanting to sleep alone.
Inappropriate sexual behaviors - sexually acting out with other children, excessive masturbation

Individuals who were abused as children may experience symptoms later as an adult. Many of the adults we see at WOAR are seeking counseling as a result of being sexually abused as a child.

If you are an adult who was abused as a child please refer to the Adult Services page for more information.
