Sexual Violence Statistics

It is difficult to estimate the numbers of people who have been sexually violated because many people do not report being assaulted and research studies use different methods to survey people.

National Numbers
Philadelphia Numbers

1 in 3 American women will be sexually abused during their lifetime. (George Mason University, Worldwide Sexual Assault Statistics, 2005)
1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18. (Finkelhor et al., 1990)
In 2002 247,730 people were raped/sexually assaulted in the US, according to a National Crime Victimization Survey (www.ncvc.org)
In 2002, 54% of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to the police (www.ncvc.org)
Every 2 minutes someone somewhere in America is sexually violated (www.rainn.org)

In Fiscal Year 2008-2009 (July-June) WOAR provided the following services:

Over 2,400 calls were answered on the hotline

Direct service (crisis intervention, counseling, medical accompaniment, legal advocacy) was provided to:

  • 1,500 adults
  • 1,250 children
  • 1,040 family members and friends

Hours of Direct Service

  • 7,225 hours to adults
  • 5,400 hours to children
  • 1,760 hours to family members and friends

Educational Programs

  • 2,000 programs in schools
  • 438 programs in the community

Numbers of Rapes reported by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Uniform Crime Report:

  • In 2004 – 1,001
  • In 2005 – 1,024
  • In 2006 - 960
