What to do if you are raped
If you have been raped seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Do not shower, eat, drink or smoke before going to the hospital, this may destroy evidence. Even if you are not sure if you want to press charges now the evidence can be taken in case you change your mind. Your clothing will also be taken as evidence so bring a change of clothes or the hospital can provide you with something to wear.
In Philadelphia there are two designated rape hospitals
Thomas Jefferson Hospital
111 S. 11th Street
215-955-6000 |
Episcopal Hospital
100 E. Lehigh Avenue
215-707-1200
|
At these hospitals trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) will:
Conduct a comprehensive medical exam
Collect forensic evidence for the police
Treatment for sexually transmitted infections
When you arrive at the hospital the staff will contact the WOAR hotline and a counselor will meet with you before or after your examination. The counselor is there for support, to answer questions and to give you information about WOAR services.
If you decide to report the assault, call 911 or contact the Special Victims Unit at 215-685-3251.
