About WOAR

WOAR is a non-profit organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whose mission is to eliminate all forms of sexual violence through specialized treatment services, comprehensive prevention education programs, and advocacy for the rights of victims of sexual assault.

Founded in 1971 and incorporated in 1973 WOAR is Philadelphia’s only rape crisis center and one of the first in the nation. Over the years the organization has grown from a group of volunteers working in a small room of a hospital to an organization that touches individuals across the city. WOAR’s Current Services Include:

Counseling Department

The Counseling Department provides a 24-hour hotline, free individual and group counseling to children and adults who have experienced sexual abuse/sexual assault, and hospital and court accompaniment.

Education Department

The Education Department offers trainings on issues of sexual violence within schools, social service organizations, and the community at large on issues of violence.

Outreach Department

The Outreach Department specializes in working within the Latino communities of Philadelphia. Bi-lingual/Bi-cultural counselors and advocates provide crisis counseling to survivors of sexual assault, and prevention education and training to professionals in the community.

Volunteer & Internship Program

WOAR also has a volunteer and internship program where adults can help us respond to hotline calls, provide medical accompaniment and work with in the community.
