Dear Friends,
As president of WOAR’s Board of Directors, it is a privilege to share an exciting new chapter for our organization and the community we serve. For over half a century, WOAR has remained steadfast in its mission to provide critical services to survivors of sexual violence, educate and empower our community, and champion prevention and justice throughout Philadelphia.
Today, I am honored to announce the appointment of Gabriella Fontan, Esq., as WOAR’s next Executive Director. Gabriella brings to WOAR a deep commitment to anti-violence advocacy, an impressive legal background, and a passion for advancing the rights and healing of survivors. Her experience as an attorney and steadfast dedication to our shared mission make her uniquely qualified to lead WOAR forward as we continue to grow and serve.
Gabriella joins us at a pivotal moment, building on the foundation of compassionate leadership set by Dr. Indira Henard, DSW, MSW, whose guidance as Executive Consultant over this past year has been invaluable to WOAR and the communities we serve. We are deeply grateful for Dr. Henard’s contributions and ongoing partnership, which have ensured a smooth transition during this period.
WOAR has always thrived on collaboration—among dedicated staff, committed board members, our diverse partners, and the incredible network of survivors and advocates who form our extended family. With Gabriella at the helm, we are confident that WOAR will continue to be a vital force for change, a partner in the city’s safety net, and a leading voice in the fight to end sexual violence once and for all.
Gabriella said “I am overjoyed to join WOAR at this pivotal moment and build on its rich history as one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the country, and the only rape crisis center in the City of Philadelphia. For over fifty years, WOAR has created many pathways to healing for survivors of sexual assault. It is the honor of a lifetime to carry this legacy forward, and work with survivors, staff, clients, community partners, stakeholders, and the Board of Directors to advance WOAR’s mission.”
On behalf of the Board, I want to thank you for your ongoing support, dedication, and unwavering belief in WOAR’s vision. Please join us in welcoming Gabriella Fontan as our new Executive Director. We look forward to all we will accomplish together, and to the continued journey ahead toward a world free from sexual violence.
With gratitude,
Joanne R. Strauss, Esquire
