  • Trauma: A Paradigm Shift Symposium hosted by GPACA

    Emily Cox, Counselor, and Special Projects Coordinator at Women Organized Against Rape - WOAR is presenting “I can’t bend into a pretzel.” - Practical applications of yoga in counseling: Lessons from working with victims/survivors of sexual violence at the Greater Philadelphia Area Counseling Association along with Pennsylvania Counseling Association Symposium. 

    Emily's presentation will focus on the following objectives:


    Objective 1: Participants will learn why yoga can be a useful intervention for individuals and groups who have experienced trauma or struggle with depression, anxiety, or PTSD symptoms.
    Objective 2: Participants will learn what makes trauma-informed yoga different than other types of yoga.
    Objective 3: Participants will learn yoga techniques that they can use with their clients right now.

    Bio: 
    Emily Cox is currently a Counselor and Special Projects Coordinator at WOAR as well as a 250 hour Certified Yoga Instructor who runs the trauma-informed yoga groups at WOAR. Emily has masters’ degrees in Counseling (with a trauma certificate) and International Peace and Conflict Resolution from Arcadia University. Currently, Emily loves to practice yoga, play with her dogs and partner, and go for walks.

  • UPenn V-Day 2018 Presents: The Vagina Monologues

    Join the 2017-2018 Penn V-Day Movement as we celebrate our 18th production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues! Our production of The Vagina Monologues has proved to be a powerful tool that further communicates our mission to over 4,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff, and residents annually.

    Each year, UPENN V-DAY CAMPAIGN raises money for our beneficiary, Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) www.woar.org - the only full-service rape crisis center in Philadelphia.

    Through extensive panel discussions, workshops, local events, and educational marketing campaigns launched on campus and online, V-Day UPenn strives to motivate Penn students, faculty and staff to find their collective voice and demand an end to gender-based violence, particularly as it plagues college campuses.

    Topics covered in CORE include knowledge on common reactions after a sexual violence experience, coping skills/self-care, anger, guilt and self-blame, and relaxation techniques.

    The goals of CORE group focus on raising awareness of sexual violence, healing techniques, and connecting with other survivors for support. Group participants are asked not to share graphic sexual violent experiences in the group.

    CORE group meets every Monday from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.

    Topics covered in this group include understanding what the criminal justice system for sexual assault cases looks like, ways to achieve closure outside of the criminal justice system, and restoring balance in life.

    The goals of Sexual Assault Court Support Group include understanding the reporting process and court system for sexual assault and connecting with other survivors for support. Group participants are asked not to share graphic sexual violent experiences in the group.

    Sexual Assault Court Support Group meets every Wednesday from 1:30 pm to 3 pm.
